The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory is located at the highest point of the island of La Palma, one of the Canary Islands, in Spain. At an altitude of approximately 2,396 meters above sea level, the observatory benefits from exceptional conditions for astronomical observation, including low light pollution and stable atmospheric conditions. It is part of the European Northern Observatory and hosts a range of telescopic instruments managed by various international institutions. The site is known for its diverse range of cutting-edge telescopes, such as the Gran Telescopio Canarias, one of the world’s largest infrared and optical telescopes. The area around the observatory provides breathtaking views of the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, offering visitors a combination of scientific intrigue and natural beauty. The dry air and high altitude create a unique ecosystem with specific high-altitude flora and fauna, adding to its appeal for ecotourists.
