About Rogerstown Estuary Nature Reserve

Rogerstown Estuary Nature Reserve is a vital coastal wetland and bird sanctuary located in north County Dublin, renowned for its rich biodiversity and tranquil estuarine landscapes perfect for wildlife watching and peaceful nature walks.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Rogerstown Estuary Nature Reserve is a nationally important protected wetland area situated along the Irish Sea coast near Rush and Lusk in County Dublin. Covering approximately 2.7 square kilometers, it is the largest estuarine habitat in the Dublin region and a designated Special Protection Area and Special Area of Conservation under the EU Habitats Directive. The estuary forms the meeting point of the Rush River and the Irish Sea, creating a brackish environment with extensive saltmarshes, mudflats, and tidal channels that support rich biodiversity. The site is internationally recognized for its importance as a wintering and migration habitat for wildfowl and wading birds, hosting significant populations of species such as Brent geese, oystercatchers, curlew, and redshank. The surrounding reed beds and marshes also provide shelter for rare and vulnerable birds and a diverse range of aquatic plants, insects, and fish. Rogerstown offers scenic walking paths and bird hides that allow visitors to observe wildlife without disturbing the habitat. The reserve's proximity to Dublin city makes it a popular day-trip destination for naturalists, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Recent conservation efforts focus on habitat restoration and monitoring to ensure the ecological integrity of the estuary remains intact amidst urban pressures and changing climate conditions. Visitors appreciate the peaceful, natural setting and the chance to connect with Ireland’s coastal ecosystems and migratory bird populations within a short drive of the capital.
