Rocky Narrows Conservation Land is a protected natural area located along the Charles River between the towns of Sherborn and Medfield, Massachusetts. This conservation tract is characterized by steep rocky cliffs, riverine ecosystems, and forested hillsides that provide a scenic backdrop for outdoor recreation. The area’s geography includes winding trails that traverse rocky outcrops and overlook the Charles River, which flows through a gorge carved in ancient metamorphic rock formations. The land supports a rich variety of habitats including mixed hardwood forests, riverine wetlands, and mossy ledges, home to diverse wildlife such as North American beavers, songbirds, white-tailed deer, and occasional river otters.

Historically, Rocky Narrows area was used for limited quarrying and logging but was preserved to maintain its ecological and scenic values. It serves as an important link within the regional greenway system, providing a natural refuge amidst suburban development. Popular recreation opportunities include hiking on well-maintained trails, mountain biking on rugged single-track routes, kayaking and canoeing on the Charles River’s gentle stretches, as well as fishing and seasonal birdwatching. Key landmarks include the dramatic cliff overlooks that afford elevated views of the river corridor, natural rock formations, and several small waterfalls along tributary streams.

Visitors appreciate Rocky Narrows for its combination of accessible outdoor adventure and natural beauty. The land is owned and managed by the Trustees of Reservations, ensuring preservation and controlled public access. The diversity of habitats, together with scenic rock faces and flowing water features, makes Rocky Narrows a favored spot for both casual day use and more active pursuits.
