About Roan Plateau

The Roan Plateau is a significant public land area in western Colorado featuring diverse ecosystems, striking geological formations, and a mix of recreational opportunities alongside natural resource development.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in Garfield County, Colorado, the Roan Plateau rises dramatically above the Colorado River, offering extensive views of rugged cliffs, mesas, and canyon lands. Spanning approximately 88,000 acres, this plateau is recognized both for its unique ecological communities and its substantial natural gas reserves. The landscape features a blend of pinyon-juniper woodlands, sagebrush steppe, mixed conifer forests, and shrublands, supporting abundant wildlife including mule deer, elk, mountain lions, and numerous bird species. The Roan Plateau has a complex history involving land management balancing energy extraction with conservation and recreation. Its natural gas development has sparked significant litigation and land-use debates to protect sensitive habitats while allowing resource access. Outdoor recreation opportunities include hiking, wildlife viewing, hunting, scenic driving, and photography. The area is not officially a designated National Park or Wilderness but is managed under a BLM framework with some protected segments. Highlights include dramatic escarpments, rare plant communities, and views of the adjacent Colorado River corridor. While trail networks are limited and informal, visitors can explore routes to overlooks and sandstone formations. The Roan Plateau offers a remote and rugged experience, appealing to those interested in geology, natural history, and quiet outdoor exploration combined with an awareness of ongoing land-use challenges.
