About Rice Lake Wildlife Area

Rice Lake Wildlife Area in Wisconsin offers a vital habitat for diverse waterfowl and wildlife, attracting birders, hunters, and anglers alike with its rich wetlands and expansive lake access.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Rice Lake Wildlife Area is a 7,500-acre protected natural area located in Barron County, northern Wisconsin. The area centers around Rice Lake, a shallow, 6,000-acre lake known for its extensive marshes, wet meadows, and diverse wetland complexes. These wetlands serve as an essential habitat for waterfowl, including ducks, geese, and swans, as well as a host of other wildlife species such as deer, beaver, muskrat, and numerous songbirds. The Wildlife Area is managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) with a mission to preserve these habitats for recreation as well as conservation. Historically, the surrounding region was a mix of timberland and wetlands, which over time have been maintained and restored to support native wildlife. Rice Lake itself has a reputation as a prime spot for ice fishing and open-water fishing, particularly for species like northern pike, walleye, and panfish. Alongside fishing, the Wildlife Area supports popular activities such as birdwatching, waterfowl hunting, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Visitors can explore a network of maintained trails and roads that provide access to observation blinds, boat landings, and hunting zones. The Rice Lake Wildlife Area is an important refuge within Wisconsin’s landscape, drawing outdoor enthusiasts interested in experiencing the region’s natural wetland ecosystems and observing abundant wildlife. The area also plays a role in regional water quality and flood mitigation efforts. Visitors appreciate the peaceful setting alongside opportunities to engage directly with Wisconsin’s rich outdoor heritage.
