Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Located off the coast of the municipality of L'Estartit in Catalonia, Spain, the Reserva Natural Integral de les Illes Medes i el Baix Ter comprises the Medes Islands archipelago and the adjacent Baix Ter coastal area. Established in 1983, this protected reserve preserves one of the Mediterranean's most important marine ecosystems. The Medes Islands, formed by seven small islets, rise abruptly from the seabed creating steep underwater cliffs and caves, rich with Posidonia oceanica meadows, an endemic seagrass vital for marine life. The reserve hosts an extraordinary diversity of species, including grouper, moray eels, octopuses, and numerous fish species, alongside nesting seabirds and endemic flora on land. This area represents a crucial habitat and breeding ground for marine and coastal biodiversity.
Its crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life make it a world-class destination for scuba diving and snorkeling. The underwater visibility and rich fauna attract enthusiasts from across Europe. Recreational fishing is strictly prohibited to preserve the ecological balance. On land, visitors can explore walking routes along the Baix Ter coast, enjoying panoramic views over the islands and the Mediterranean Sea. The reserve is also a scientific reference site for marine conservation and biodiversity monitoring.
The reserve embodies the successful integration of nature protection and sustainable tourism, contributing significantly to local awareness and conservation efforts. It appeals to nature lovers, marine biologists, and outdoor recreationists seeking a unique immersion in Mediterranean marine environments.
