About Reserva Costera Valdiviana

Reserva Costera Valdiviana is a coastal protected area in southern Chile known for its pristine Valdivian temperate rainforests and rugged Pacific coastline, offering diverse outdoor recreation and exceptional biodiversity.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Reserva Costera Valdiviana covers a significant portion of the southern Chilean coastline in the Los Ríos Region, preserving a large expanse of Valdivian temperate rainforest and coastal ecosystems. The reserve stretches along approximately 60 kilometers of Pacific Ocean coastline and offers a combination of dense evergreen forests, rivers, wetlands, and rocky beaches. This region is recognized globally for its high biodiversity, including endemic plant species such as ancient alerce trees (Fitzroya cupressoides) and a variety of native wildlife including pudu deer, Darwin’s fox, and abundant birdlife like the Magellanic woodpecker.

Established in 1993 through collaboration between Chilean governmental authorities and The Nature Conservancy, the reserve aims to protect these unique habitats and provide sustainable recreation opportunities. Visitors can enjoy hiking through lush forest trails, birdwatching, fishing in clean rivers, and surfing or beachcombing along isolated coastal shores. Small rivers and estuaries within the reserve are important spawning grounds for native fish.

Several marked trails lead visitors to viewpoints overlooking the Pacific and to coastal landscapes shaped by strong waves. Interpretive signage introduces the ecological importance of the temperate rainforest and coastal systems. The reserve's remote location and conservation-focused management support a serene experience, ideal for wildlife observation and nature photography. Nearby communities offer cultural insight and locally guided excursions. Overall, Reserva Costera Valdiviana appeals to outdoor enthusiasts seeking a blend of temperate rainforest adventure and Pacific coast exploration in a less crowded, well-preserved setting.
