Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre is located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, about 15 miles west of downtown Denver, Colorado. The park is centered around massive sandstone rock formations tilted upward over 300 million years ago, creating a natural open-air amphitheater well-known for its exceptional acoustics and breathtaking scenery. Covering approximately 868 acres, the park integrates geological wonders with outdoor recreation and music history. The amphitheatre, built between 1936 and 1941 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration, hosts concerts and events ranging from rock and jazz to local performances, attracting visitors from across the globe. Beyond the performance venue, the park offers more than 8 miles of hiking and biking trails weaving through canyons, towering monoliths, and native plant communities. The ecology is typical of the Colorado Front Range, with Ponderosa pines, Gambel oak, and wildlife such as mule deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. Notable landmarks within the park include the Ship Rock and Creation Rock formations, as well as the Colorado Music Hall of Fame located on-site. The park's blend of natural beauty, cultural significance, and outdoor activities makes it a favored year-round destination for hikers, concertgoers, photographers, and rock climbers.
