About Randmeren Nature Reserves

The Randmeren Nature Reserves consist of a series of interconnected lakes and wetlands east of the Flevoland polder region in the Netherlands, offering rich opportunities for birdwatching, water sports, and serene natural exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Randmeren Nature Reserves comprise a chain of shallow lakes and wetland areas situated between the provinces of Flevoland, Gelderland, and Overijssel in the central Netherlands. These bodies of water, including the Veluwerandmeren and the Wolderwijd among others, were created as a result of large-scale land reclamation and water management projects during the 20th century. The lakes serve as vital habitats for a variety of aquatic and bird species, functioning as an important stopover and breeding ground for migratory waterfowl, such as grebes, terns, herons, and various species of ducks. The surrounding reed beds, marshes, and nature islands contribute to the area's ecological diversity and make it a critical conservation zone.

The area supports recreational activities like kayaking, sailing, fishing, and hiking on designated paths and nature trails around the lakeshores. Anglers are particularly attracted to abundant species such as pike and perch. Birdwatchers can access observation points and hides carefully integrated into the reserves to minimize disturbance. Nearby villages and towns provide local cultural experiences alongside access to the natural environment. The Randmeren is also popular for cycling routes that weave through open landscapes with views across water and meadowlands.

This network of lakes and natural habitats exemplifies the Dutch dedication to environmental preservation and water management, balancing human use and wildlife protection. Visitors come here for quiet immersion in nature combined with opportunities for active outdoor recreation, enjoying the peaceful water landscapes framed by seasonal migratory bird activity and native wildlife.
