Ragged Mountain Natural Area is located in the heart of Albemarle County, Virginia, offering roughly 980 acres of undisturbed natural beauty. The area is defined by the Ragged Mountain Reservoir, which supplies water to the nearby city of Charlottesville, and its surrounding forested hills. The natural area is an attraction for visitors seeking a peaceful escape in a semi-rural setting with ample opportunities for hiking, bird-watching, and seasonal fishing. The reservoir and the appropriately rugged terrain of mixed hardwood forests host various wildlife, including white-tailed deer, beavers, and a diversity of bird species. The Ragged Mountain Natural Area boasts about 7 miles of scenic, well-maintained trails that circle the reservoir, providing picturesque views and opportunities to spot wildlife. The area was first conserved for public recreation and its importance as a water supply source in 1974. Since then, it has also become a significant habitat conservation area, balancing human recreation with environmental preservation.
