Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Prairie View Conservation Area is located in southern Missouri near the town of Mountain View. Covering over 2,000 acres, this conservation area is managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation and is primarily dedicated to the preservation of native prairie habitats, oak savannas, and forested wetlands. The landscape consists of rolling hills peppered with tallgrass prairie remnants, scattered oak woodlands, and small streams. It offers a rare glimpse into Missouri’s original prairie ecosystem that once covered large portions of the state.
The area supports a diverse range of flora, including big bluestem, Indian grass, and butterfly weed, and offers excellent opportunities to observe seasonal wildflowers in bloom. Wildlife is abundant, with white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, bobwhite quail, and a variety of songbirds. Birdwatching is especially rewarding during spring and fall migrations.
Recreational opportunities focus on hiking, nature photography, and wildlife viewing. The main trail system provides tranquil walks through prairie grasses and woodlands. The conservation area emphasizes habitat restoration and offers educational programs focused on prairie ecology. Visitors can also engage in regulated hunting and fishing in accordance with Missouri conservation guidelines.
Prairie View’s peaceful setting, educational programs, and natural beauty draw visitors interested in native ecosystems and low-impact outdoor recreation. It serves as an important site for conservation efforts targeting prairies while offering a quiet escape within Missouri’s natural landscape.
