Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Pirin National Park, located in the southwest of Bulgaria, spans over 400 square kilometers of rugged, mountainous terrain. The park features a diverse landscape that includes dramatic peaks, glacial lakes, and dense alpine forests. The park is home to Vihren Peak, the highest point in the Pirin Mountains, standing at 2,914 meters. Its varied ecosystems support a rich array of wildlife including the Balkan chamois, brown bear, and over 200 species of birds. Established to protect the region's natural beauty and ecological significance, the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Recreation opportunities are plentiful, with hiking being the most popular activity. Trails of varying difficulty offer extensive exploration of the park’s breathtaking scenery.
