The preserve encompasses steep sandstone cliffs, narrow ravines, and mature forest ecosystems, providing a rare opportunity to experience a largely undisturbed natural environment. The area's geology features dramatic cliffs sculpted by Pine Creek, which flows through the preserve creating deep gorges and diverse microhabitats. The preserve supports a variety of hardwood forest species, including sugar maples, oaks, and hickories, alongside rare plant species and orchids that thrive in the moist, shaded canyon conditions. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species, making it popular for wildlife observation and birding.
