Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park is located on the border between Phitsanulok and Phetchabun provinces in northern Thailand. Covering approximately 307 square kilometers, the park is characterized by rugged mountain terrain, cliffs, and unusual rock formations. The park's name roughly translates to 'Mountain of CRacked Rocks,' highlighting the dramatic karst landscape. At elevations averaging 1,200 meters with peaks reaching over 1,600 meters, the park has a cooler climate than much of Thailand. This climate supports a mix of tropical evergreen, deciduous, and montane forest ecosystems, harboring a diversity of flora and fauna, including several species of birds and small mammals. The park also has notable waterfalls and streams that enhance its natural beauty.

Historically, Phu Hin Rong Kla was a strategic communist stronghold during Thailand's political insurgency in the 1960s and 1970s. Several remnants of military camps and tunnels remain, attracting visitors interested in historical exploration. Among the key landmarks is the Phu Hin Rong Kla summit viewpoint, which provides panoramic vistas of surrounding peaks and valleys. Other notable attractions include Namtok Kaeng Song waterfall and the large open plateau at Na Phang Hin, which is famous for its expansive cracked rock surfaces.
