About Penyagolosa Natural Park

Penyagolosa Natural Park is a striking protected area in eastern Spain famed for its rugged limestone peaks, rich biodiversity, and traditional cultural heritage, offering exceptional hiking and nature experiences.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Penyagolosa Natural Park, located in the Valencian Community near the border of the province of Castellón, is centered around the imposing Penyagolosa peak, which at 1,813 meters is the highest mountain in the region. The park spans a diverse landscape of rocky limestone formations, Mediterranean forests, gorges, and karstic plateaus. It is an ecological hotspot hosting a variety of flora including pine, fir, and oak forests, as well as endemic and protected species such as the Spanish ibex, wild boar, and numerous bird species including the golden eagle and Eurasian eagle-owl. The park also preserves traditional rural landscapes and small mountain villages that reflect centuries of pastoral and agricultural life. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to its extensive trail network, offering hikes ranging from leisurely walks to challenging ascents culminating in panoramic views from the summit of Penyagolosa. Other highlights include scenic river valleys and natural springs. Visitors often explore cultural landmarks such as small chapels and hermitages tucked within the wilderness. The park serves as both a biodiversity refuge and a cultural treasure, blending nature conservation with opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, and photography throughout the year.
