About Pemaquid Preserve

Pemaquid Preserve offers 1,000 acres of rugged coastal landscapes and diverse habitats in Maine, renowned for its scenic hiking trails, rich ecological diversity, and iconic rocky shorelines.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Pemaquid Preserve, located on Maine’s Midcoast near the town of Bristol, encompasses more than 1,000 acres of coastal forest, salt marsh, spruce-fir mountain summits, and rocky shores along the Atlantic Ocean. The preserve is characterized by dramatic granite cliffs and expansive ocean views, offering a quintessential New England coastal experience. Managed by the Coastal Mountains Land Trust, the preserve protects a mosaic of habitats that support an array of flora and fauna, including rare orchids, migratory seabirds, and various coastal mammals. The area’s diverse ecosystems range from dense spruce-fir forests on higher elevations to tidal wetlands and salt marshes along the shore. Visitors can explore over 12 miles of well-maintained trails that traverse diverse terrain, including the challenging Great Head Trail that reveals panoramic ocean vistas and rocky coastline. Beyond hiking, Pemaquid Preserve offers excellent opportunities for birdwatching, nature photography, and tidepool exploration. Its coastal location also provides access to kayak launches for paddling adventures around offshore islands. The preserve holds cultural and natural significance; the dramatic cliffs and coves have been inspiring artists and naturalists for centuries. Visitors appreciate its peaceful atmosphere, relatively uncrowded trails, and the chance to experience some of Maine’s most iconic coastal landscapes in a lightly developed setting. Educational programs and guided walks occasionally take place, highlighting the preserve’s ecological importance and conservation efforts. Pemaquid Preserve is an exceptional destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking rugged coastal beauty combined with rich biological diversity and tranquility just a few hours’ drive from major urban centers.
