Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Parque Provincial Salto Encantado is located in the northeastern Argentine province of Misiones, an area famed for its dense Atlantic Forest and abundant biodiversity. The park is centered around the stunning Salto Encantado waterfall, which cascades roughly 70 meters (230 feet) into a rocky gorge surrounded by verdant tropical vegetation. Covering an area of subtropical rainforest, the park's geography features rolling hills, elevated ridges, and creeks that feed into the waterfall. Rich in flora, visitors can witness native species such as yerba mate, lapacho, and several orchid varieties. The fauna includes a variety of birds like toucans and the colorful parrot species, mammals such as capuchin monkeys, and diverse amphibians. Established in 1994, Salto Encantado offers a network of clearly marked trails, lookout points, and picnic areas, catering to hikers, birdwatchers, and families alike. The park also serves as a conservation stronghold for the region’s endemic species and is part of the broader Atlantic Forest biosphere reserve. Visitors enjoy guided hikes to the waterfall viewpoints as well as trails that traverse the lush forest, offering sightings of local wildlife. The park’s accessibility and its well-maintained facilities make it a popular day-trip destination from nearby towns. With an ecological emphasis on preserving native ecosystems, it plays an essential role in educating visitors about conservation and sustainable recreation in one of Argentina’s most biodiverse regions.
