About Parque Natural de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares

Parque Natural de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares is a protected natural area in the Community of Madrid, offering spectacular mountainous landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, and abundant opportunities for hiking and nature exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range north of Madrid, Parque Natural de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares protects the upper watershed of the Manzanares River. Established in 1985, it is one of the largest protected natural spaces in the Madrid region, covering over 19,000 hectares that exhibit a striking variety of landscapes, including rugged granite peaks, dense Mediterranean forest, and riparian ecosystems. The park’s geography features steep cliffs, deep valleys, and mountainous terrain, with elevations reaching above 2,000 meters, such as the emblematic La Maliciosa peak. Ecologically, it supports important species like the Spanish imperial eagle, black vulture, and wild boars, alongside diverse plant communities of oaks, pines, and junipers. Historically, the area has been shaped by centuries of traditional farming, forestry, and pastoral use, with small villages like Manzanares el Real anchoring the human presence. Visitors are drawn to the park for outstanding hiking trails, rock climbing opportunities at the famous La Pedriza granite formations, and scenic spots like the Santillana reservoir. The park also offers mountain biking routes and spots for birdwatching. Its proximity to Madrid makes it an accessible natural retreat for locals and tourists alike, highlighting a blend of natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and cultural heritage. Visitors experience a mix of wild landscapes and managed nature, with established visitor centers providing educational resources and route information.
