Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Parc del Montnegre i el Corredor is a natural park located in the Catalonia region of northeastern Spain, spanning parts of the comarques of Maresme and Vallès Oriental. It encompasses two mountain ranges: Montnegre and Corredor, which rise from the Mediterranean coast to inland valleys. The park features rugged terrain, with dense Mediterranean forests dominated by holm oak, cork oak, pine, and chestnut, alongside lush areas of Mediterranean shrubland. This diverse ecosystem supports a wide range of wildlife including wild boar, foxes, birds of prey such as the peregrine falcon, and numerous small mammals and reptiles. Important streams and springs add to the park’s ecological value and support endemic species. Historically, the region has traces of ancient human settlement including Roman roads and medieval farmhouses, adding cultural interest to the natural scenery. Visitors are drawn to its extensive trail system that offers hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding opportunities through scenic forests, limestone cliffs, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the Barcelona metropolitan area. Key landmarks include the Corredor summit at approximately 512 meters, the historic Monastery of Sant Martí del Montnegre, and various traditional dry stone walls and rural architecture nestled within the landscape. The park serves as an important green lung near the urban sprawl, providing recreational and educational opportunities emphasizing environmental conservation, outdoor activities, and cultural heritage. It appeals to nature lovers, photographers, and local residents seeking a peaceful natural escape close to Barcelona.
