About Páramo de Chiles

Páramo de Chiles is a high-altitude tropical alpine ecosystem spanning the Colombia-Ecuador border, characterized by unique páramo flora, spectacular volcanoes, and rich biodiversity that invites adventurous trekking and nature exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Páramo de Chiles is an ecologically valuable high-altitude páramo region located at the border of southern Colombia (Nariño Department) and northern Ecuador (Carchi Province). This area centers around the active Chiles Volcano which rises to approximately 4,720 meters (15,486 feet) above sea level. The páramo alpine tundra ecosystem here is among the most fragile and biologically diverse in the northern Andes, featuring specialized plants such as frailejones, cushion plants, mosses, and grasses adapted to cold, humid conditions and volcanic soils.

This protected páramo zone hosts a variety of wildlife, including Andean bears, spectacled bears, mountain tapirs, and an abundance of endemic bird species such as the paramo ground-tyrant and the Andean condor. Visitors can experience trekking opportunities that range from moderate to challenging routes around volcanic landscapes, glacial lakes, and páramo meadows. Indigenous and local communities inhabit nearby areas, contributing cultural significance and traditional ecological knowledge tied to the land.

The Páramo de Chiles region stands out for its volcanic origins, pristine high-altitude wetlands that act as important water regulators, and its role in carbon sequestration. Outdoor enthusiasts value the dramatic mountain scenery and opportunity for ecological study, while conservationists focus on preserving its delicate environment threatened by climate change and grazing pressures. While infrastructure is limited, carefully planned expeditions allow visitors to immerse in the wild beauty of the páramo, with scenic overlooks of the Chiles and Cerro Negro volcanoes being particularly prominent landmarks.
