About Oyambre Natural Park

Oyambre Natural Park is a coastal protected area in northern Spain renowned for its diverse marine and terrestrial ecosystems, offering excellent opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and beach activities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Oyambre Natural Park is located on the northern coast of Spain in the autonomous community of Cantabria. This protected area spans a varied landscape of sandy beaches, dunes, wetlands, and cliffs along the Cantabrian Sea, creating a mosaic of ecosystems that support a rich biodiversity. The park includes the estuary of the Oyambre River, salt marshes, and wooded areas dominated by pine forests and oak groves. It lies within the municipality of San Vicente de la Barquera and close to the town of Comillas, making it an accessible destination to both nature lovers and cultural tourists.

The natural park is a haven for birdwatchers, as it hosts numerous species of migratory and resident birds including flamingos, herons, and seagulls. The coastal dunes are important habitats for endemic plants and act as natural storm buffers. Outdoor activities in Oyambre include hiking along marked trails that pass through dunes and forests, beachcombing, swimming at several picturesque beaches, and horseback riding. The park also has rich cultural significance with historic fishing villages nearby and traditional Cantabrian architecture. Visitors appreciate its unspoiled natural beauty, tranquil environment, and range of family-friendly outdoor options.

Notable landmarks include the picturesque Oyambre beach with its fine sand and dunes, the ecological richness of the marshes, and the viewpoint at La Arnía cliffs where visitors can enjoy dramatic sea vistas. Oyambre’s well-balanced combination of coastal morphology and terrestrial habitats makes it both a key conservation area and a popular spot for sustainable recreation. Throughout the year, it offers an authentic experience of Cantabria’s natural and cultural heritage.
