Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Situated in southwestern Ethiopia, Omo National Park spans approximately 1,600 square miles along the lower reaches of the Omo River. It is renowned for its rich biodiversity, hosting wildlife such as elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and many species of antelope. The park's diverse terrain includes riverine forests, grasslands, and savannas, making it an excellent area for wildlife viewing. Although it is one of the least developed parks in the country, it is a critical region for ecological research and conservation efforts. Historically, the Omo River Valley is significant due to its archaeological discoveries, contributing to our understanding of early human history. Visitors can experience its natural beauty via guided tours, though self-guided exploration is challenging due to its remoteness and limited infrastructure.
