Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Ohio Bird Sanctuary, located near West Chester, Ohio, spans approximately 60 acres of forest, wetland, and meadow habitats dedicated to bird conservation and education. Established in 1984, it operates as a nonprofit sanctuary providing rescue, rehabilitation, and permanent care for injured, orphaned, and non-releasable native Ohio birds. The sanctuary’s grounds include diverse habitats such as hardwood forests, vernal pools, and open meadows, supporting over 100 bird species year-round and attracting numerous migratory visitors during spring and fall. Visitors can explore nearly three miles of maintained walking trails that wind through habitats ideal for birdwatching and photography. The sanctuary features interpretive signage along trails, an education center with live bird exhibits, and regularly scheduled guided bird walks and educational programs. It also plays a key role in local conservation by offering habitat preservation and public outreach to raise awareness about native bird species and their ecological needs. Notable residents include barred owls, red-tailed hawks, kestrels, and screech owls, many of which cannot survive in the wild due to injury. The Ohio Bird Sanctuary is a vital green space where visitors of all ages can connect with nature, observe birds up close, and learn about wildlife rehabilitation efforts. Dog-friendly policies do not apply to protect sensitive wildlife, but the quiet, natural setting offers an excellent opportunity for peaceful nature walks all seasons of the year.
