About Oak Openings Region Metroparks

Oak Openings Region Metroparks is a unique natural area in northwest Ohio known for its rare oak savanna and prairie ecosystems, offering diverse hiking, wildlife viewing, and outdoor recreation opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Oak Openings Region Metroparks, located primarily in Lucas County, Ohio, preserve one of the largest remaining oak savanna and rare prairie habitats in the Midwest. This area stands out for its distinctive geology and ecology, shaped by glacial activity that left sandy soils supporting a mosaic of oak woodlands, tallgrass prairies, wetlands, and vernal pools. The region supports an exceptional diversity of plants and animals, including many rare and endangered species such as the Karner blue butterfly and several native orchid species. Historically inhabited by Native American communities and later influenced by early settlers, the landscape has been actively maintained and restored by conservationists. Visitors can explore over 80 miles of trails winding through diverse habitats, ideal for hiking, birdwatching, mountain biking, and seasonal activities like cross-country skiing. Notable sites within the parks include Wildwood Preserve Metropark, known for its historic manor house and formal gardens, and the Oak Openings Preserve Golf Course that integrates natural features. The parks also feature educational centers and guided nature programs, helping deepen visitor appreciation for the area's ecological importance. The forests, prairies, and wetlands attract a rich variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, numerous bird species, and wildflowers that bloom in spring and summer. Being one of the largest protected natural complexes in northwest Ohio, Oak Openings Region Metroparks serves as a critical green space for outdoor recreation, environmental education, and wildlife habitat preservation, drawing residents and visitors alike who seek nature experiences close to urban areas.
