Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Nygren Wetland Preserve covers 721 acres in the Rockton Township near the confluence of the Pecatonica and Rock Rivers. It consists of prairie, wetland, and forest ecosystems that provide critical habitat for a wide variety of plant and animal species, including migratory waterfowl and numerous types of insects and mammals. Managed by the Natural Land Institute, this preserve serves both as a vital conservation area and a recreational haven. Visitors can explore via the network of trails, which offer chances to engage in birdwatching, photography, and experiencing the region's natural beauty. Historical markers indicate the preserve’s transformation from agricultural use back to a natural state, illustrating the resilience and recovery of these ecosystems. Facilities include a parking lot and well-maintained trails providing easy access to the wetlands and viewing areas.
