About Neuse River Basin Wetlands

The Neuse River Basin Wetlands comprise important freshwater and tidal wetland habitats across the Neuse River watershed in North Carolina, offering diverse opportunities for wildlife viewing, paddling, and ecological study.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Neuse River Basin Wetlands span much of the lower Neuse River watershed in eastern North Carolina, encompassing a wide array of freshwater and tidal wetlands such as swamps, marshes, and bottomland hardwood forests. These wetlands are critical for water filtration, flood control, and provide essential habitat for diverse plant and animal species. The basin itself covers approximately 5,000 square miles and includes both rural and urbanized regions, with wetlands scattered throughout. Historically, this basin supported significant Native American settlements and later became vital for agriculture and commerce, with wetlands often drained or altered until conservation efforts increased during the late 20th century. Today, many wetland areas are protected through state and local nature preserves, wildlife refuges, and private conservation lands. Visitors can explore these wetlands primarily via canoe and kayak on slow-moving tributaries and river sections, or through various walking trails at designated state parks and wetland preserves. The wetlands support a range of wildlife, including migratory waterfowl, amphibians, otters, and endangered species such as the Neuse River waterdog salamander. Popular landmarks within the basin include the Cliffs of the Neuse State Park, with scenic viewpoints and boardwalks over wetlands, and the Moccasin Creek Nature Preserve, known for birdwatching. The Neuse River Basin Wetlands appeal to outdoor enthusiasts interested in paddling, wildlife photography, and natural history education, as well as conservationists working to maintain water quality and habitats in a rapidly developing region.
