About Nestos River Delta Protected Area

The Nestos River Delta Protected Area is a biodiverse wetland located along the northern Aegean coast of Greece, offering unique opportunities for birdwatching, hiking, and natural exploration in a rich coastal ecosystem.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Nestos River Delta Protected Area is situated in the northeastern region of Greece, where the Nestos River meets the northern Aegean Sea. Covering a diverse range of ecosystems including riverine forests, freshwater marshes, coastal dunes, and sandy beaches, it forms one of the most important wetland habitats in the Balkans. This protected area is recognized under the Ramsar Convention for its international significance as a wetland habitat, particularly for migratory bird species and endemic flora and fauna. The delta supports over 290 bird species, including rare and protected birds such as the Dalmatian pelican, glossy ibis, and various species of herons and raptors. The mosaic of habitats creates a sanctuary for wildlife and a prime destination for wildlife photography and birdwatching. Historically, the region has been a crossing point for civilizations, with archaeological sites nearby that reflect its long-standing significance to human settlement. Recreational opportunities emphasize nature-based activities like guided boat tours, birdwatching hides, and nature trails that intersect the varied terrain. The area's trails provide access to dune systems and reed beds, while the proximity to the sea offers additional activities such as fishing and kayaking. Visitors appreciate the relatively low visitor density, which enhances the experience of solitude and immersion into natural surroundings. Conservation efforts continue to focus on preserving the water quality, limiting urban development nearby, and managing sustainable tourism to protect this fragile environment.
