Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Located between the Albera mountain range and the Mediterranean Sea, the Natural Space of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà spans approximately 4,800 hectares of protected wetlands, marshes, dunes, and lagoons along the Costa Brava. Established in 1983, it is the second-largest wetland area in Catalonia and serves as a critical habitat for a variety of flora and fauna, particularly migratory and resident bird species. The landscape is characterized by reed beds, salt pans, and freshwater ponds that shelter species such as flamingos, herons, egrets, and eagles, making it one of the best birdwatching sites in the Iberian Peninsula.
Historically, parts of the wetlands were reclaimed for agriculture and salt harvesting until protection efforts led to restoration and ecological recovery. Today, the reserve is managed for conservation as well as sustainable environmental education and recreation. Visitors can explore the area via well-maintained trails and observation towers, offering immersive wildlife viewing without disturbing habitats. Additionally, the reserve features an informative visitor center that highlights the importance of Mediterranean wetlands and local ecology.
Recreation in the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà centers on hiking, birdwatching, and photography, with routes accessible to a wide range of visitors. The area also acts as an important stopover on bird migration routes, making seasonal animal activity dynamic and impressive. With its unique combination of coastal and wetland ecosystems, the reserve provides a serene nature experience close to towns such as Castelló d'Empúries and Figueres, while contributing to regional biodiversity conservation efforts.
