About Natura 2000 Werra Valley

The Natura 2000 Werra Valley is a vital conservation area featuring rich riparian habitats along the Werra River, known for its diverse flora, fauna, and scenic outdoor opportunities including hiking and wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Natura 2000 Werra Valley stretches along the Werra River across parts of Thuringia, Hesse, and Bavaria in central Germany. This protected area forms part of the Natura 2000 network, the European Union's flagship biodiversity conservation initiative. It encompasses a mosaic of habitats including riverine forests, meadows, wetlands, cliffs, and old-growth woodlands that provide critical support for many rare and endangered species. The Werra River is the main lifeline flowing through the valley, shaping the landscape and providing vital spawning grounds for fish and habitat for migratory birds. Historically, the Werra Valley was shaped by traditional agricultural and forestry practices, helping to sustain its high biodiversity. Today, it is prized by nature enthusiasts, hikers, and bird watchers who can explore well-maintained trails following the river and through the adjacent natural forests. Notable features include extensive riparian ecosystems, populations of bats, beavers, kingfishers, and various orchid species. The valley also supports populations of European otters and the rare black stork. Hiking trails along the Werra provide scenic views of the river and the steep valley sides, with access points in charming towns such as Bad Salzungen and Vacha. The area’s blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and high conservation value makes it a rewarding destination for ecotourism and outdoor activities that emphasize sustainability and environmental education.
