About Vikos–Aoos National Park

Vikos–Aoos National Park features dramatic gorges, diverse ecosystems, and rich cultural history, making it a premier destination for hiking, wildlife viewing, and exploring rugged mountain landscapes.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the rugged region of Epirus in northwestern Greece, Vikos–Aoos National Park spans an area that includes two iconic gorges—the Vikos Gorge and Aoos Gorge—both renowned for their impressive geological formations and natural beauty. The park covers parts of the Pindus mountain range and includes elevations ranging from approximately 400 to over 2,400 meters, creating a wide range of habitats supportive of diverse flora and fauna. The Vikos Gorge is considered one of the deepest gorges in the world relative to its width, with dramatic cliffs made up of limestone and sandstone. The park's landscape is a mixture of dense forests, alpine meadows, rivers, and karstic formations. This rich ecology supports rare species such as the Balkan chamois, golden eagle, brown bear, and various endemic plants.

Historically, the region has been inhabited for millennia, with traditional villages preserving local customs and architecture, adding a cultural layer to the park's outdoor appeal. Visitors are drawn to the extensive trail network that provides access to spectacular viewpoints, cascading rivers, and secluded villages. The Aoos River is notable for whitewater activities, while other parts of the park offer opportunities for bird watching, mountain biking, and climbing. The area appeals to nature lovers, hikers, and photographers seeking a scenic yet less crowded alternative to more famous national parks. Vikos–Aoos National Park also plays a critical role in protecting the natural environment and is managed to balance conservation with sustainable tourism.
