About La Tigra National Park

La Tigra National Park is a lush cloud forest reserve near Tegucigalpa, Honduras, offering scenic trails, diverse wildlife, and cool mountain escapes for nature lovers.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

La Tigra National Park, established in 1980, is one of Honduras' premier protected cloud forest areas, located approximately 20 kilometers north of the capital, Tegucigalpa. Spanning over 2400 hectares, the park features steep mountainous terrain with elevations ranging from 1200 to 2438 meters, providing a cool, humid microclimate that sustains dense montane and cloud forests. The park's dense vegetation is home to a rich variety of flora, including towering pine and broadleaf trees, orchids, bromeliads, and mosses. La Tigra supports diverse fauna such as howler monkeys, toucans, armadillos, and the endangered Resplendent Quetzal.

Visitors to La Tigra can explore an extensive network of well-maintained hiking trails that wind through mist-covered forests, alongside streams and waterfalls. Popular trails range from easy loops to more challenging treks, culminating at viewpoints offering panoramic vistas of Tegucigalpa and its surroundings. The park plays a critical role as a watershed, supplying clean water to Tegucigalpa and nearby communities. Hiking, birdwatching, and nature photography are among the top recreational activities, enhanced by the park’s serenity and biodiversity. Visitor infrastructure includes picnic areas, a small visitor center, and signage that educates guests about the park's ecology and conservation efforts. La Tigra’s proximity to the capital makes it an accessible day trip for locals and tourists seeking respite from urban heat and busy city life.
