Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the municipality of Cordova, Cebu, Nalusuan Island Marine Sanctuary spans a part of the Olango Island Group in Central Visayas, Philippines. This small island and its surrounding waters are protected under local marine conservation initiatives to preserve the area's rich coral reefs, seagrass beds, and diverse marine wildlife. The sanctuary features some of the healthiest and most colorful coral reefs in the region, supporting a wide variety of fish species, sea turtles, and other marine fauna. Historically, the island was once a fishing village that transitioned to an ecotourism hub due to increasing awareness of the importance of marine ecosystem conservation.

Visitors flock to Nalusuan for world-class snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities, with underwater visibility often exceeding 30 meters. The area’s shallow reefs are accessible even to beginners, while deeper spots cater to experienced divers. Aside from underwater activities, the island hosts a resort that balances sustainable tourism with conservation education, promoting responsible interaction with the environment. The sanctuary also serves as a vital nursery for various fish species, supporting both biodiversity and local fisheries.

Nalusuan’s charm extends beyond its underwater world, featuring white sandy beaches and tranquil lagoon areas ideal for paddleboarding and relaxing. It is also a popular spot for bird watching and ecological tours focused on marine conservation efforts. Its location, just a short boat ride from mainland Cebu, makes it easily accessible, providing an immersive tropical marine experience combined with community-based sustainable tourism that directly benefits local stakeholders.
