About Mojanda Lagoon

Mojanda Lagoon is a high-altitude volcanic crater lake located in the Ecuadorian Andes, renowned for its stunning scenery, unique ecosystems, and excellent hiking opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Mojanda Lagoon, situated at an elevation of approximately 3,800 meters (12,467 feet) above sea level, lies within the Mojanda volcanic complex in the Ecuadorian Andes, near the town of Otavalo. This series of three crater lakes—Caricocha, Yanacocha, and a third minor lagoon—is nestled amidst rugged highland páramo landscapes, formed by ancient volcanic activity. The largest and most visited of the lakes is Caricocha, known for its striking turquoise waters surrounded by snow-capped peaks and rolling moorlands.

Ecologically, the Mojanda area hosts a high-altitude Andean ecosystem, featuring páramo flora such as frailejones, cushion plants, and ichu grasses. Wildlife includes Andean foxes, spectacled bears, and a variety of bird species, including waterfowl and hummingbirds.

Recreational opportunities are rich, with hiking being the primary activity. Several well-marked trails range from moderate to challenging, offering spectacular views of the crater lakes, volcanic peaks, and nearby Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve. Visitors can enjoy day hikes, birdwatching, and photography in a peaceful, relatively undeveloped setting.

Culturally, the area is close to indigenous Otavalo communities, allowing visitors to combine nature outings with cultural experiences. The site is increasingly popular with tourists wanting to escape crowded urban centers and experience Ecuador’s high Andes wilderness. Mojanda Lagoons remain a valued natural refuge, blending volcanic geology, diverse ecosystems, and enticing adventure opportunities.
