About Mocho-Choshuenco National Reserve

Mocho-Choshuenco National Reserve is a protected area in southern Chile featuring active volcanoes, pristine Andean forests, and diverse outdoor recreation opportunities including hiking, mountaineering, and nature observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Mocho-Choshuenco National Reserve spans an area around the Mocho and Choshuenco volcanoes in the Los Ríos and Los Lagos regions of southern Chile. It is characterized by rugged mountainous terrain, dense temperate rainforests, volcanic landscapes, and glacial lakes. The reserve protects important Valdivian rainforest ecosystems, including evergreen southern beech forests and unique endemic flora and fauna. Volcanic features such as the snow-capped Mocho volcano (2,430 m) and Choshuenco volcano (2,415 m), both part of the Andes volcanic belt, dominate the scenery and provide opportunities for mountaineering and backcountry adventures. Hiking trails traverse the reserve, connecting viewpoints, waterfalls, and forested valleys. The area has cultural significance to Mapuche communities, who consider the volcanoes sacred. Mocho-Choshuenco’s geology includes volcanic craters, lava flows, and hot springs, attracting visitors interested in geology and nature photography. Recreational activities include trekking, camping, fishing in cold mountain streams, and winter snow sports during the colder months. The reserve offers a remote experience with relatively low visitation compared to other Chilean protected areas, ideal for visitors seeking tranquility and connection with nature. Access is generally via Route T-85 from Panguipulli or Futrono, with several entry points to trails and wilderness zones. The reserve’s forests provide habitat for wildlife such as pudú deer, Andean fox, and various bird species including black-throated huet-huet and chucao tapaculo. Conservation efforts focus on preserving biodiversity and natural landscapes while supporting sustainable visitor use.
