About Mission Peak Regional Preserve

Mission Peak Regional Preserve offers a popular hiking destination in California’s East Bay with panoramic views from its summit, attracting outdoor enthusiasts seeking scenic vistas and physical challenge.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Mission Peak Regional Preserve is located in the eastern foothills of the Diablo Range in Alameda County, California. Managed by the East Bay Regional Park District, this preserve encompasses rugged terrain, grasslands, oak woodlands, and chaparral ecosystems. Its iconic summit, Mission Peak, rises to 2,517 feet and provides hikers and bird watchers with spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay Area. The preserve’s landscape supports a variety of wildlife including red-tailed hawks, bobcats, and California quail. Mission Peak is historically significant as part of the lands traditionally used by the Ohlone people and features remnants of early ranching activities. Outdoor recreation opportunities focus primarily on hiking, with well-maintained trails leading to the summit and connecting to neighboring parks. The most frequented trail starts at the Ohlone Wilderness Trail parking lot in Fremont and is known for its steep ascent and rewarding vistas. Visitors also enjoy photography, trail running, and occasional horseback riding. Due to its proximity to urban centers, Mission Peak is one of the most visited preserves in the Bay Area, with high seasonal traffic especially on weekends and holidays. Efforts to balance heavy use with habitat preservation include parking restrictions, vegetation restoration, and educational signage. The preserve’s rugged beauty and challenging climb make it a favorite for locals and tourists eager for an accessible yet invigorating outdoor experience.
