About Misali Island Marine Reserve

Misali Island Marine Reserve is a protected area known for its rich coral reefs and diverse marine life, offering exceptional snorkeling and diving experiences in the Zanzibar archipelago.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Misali Island Marine Reserve is located in the Pemba Channel, off the west coast of Pemba Island, Tanzania. The reserve protects an area of approximately 28 square kilometers surrounding Misali Island, an important marine ecosystem supporting vibrant coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangroves. Established in 1997, this marine reserve is part of the larger Pemba Channel Conservation Area and serves as a refuge for numerous fish species, sea turtles, dolphin pods, and several species of endangered marine life. The island and its surrounding waters are renowned for their clear turquoise waters, making it a top destination for snorkeling, scuba diving, and marine wildlife observation. Visitors can explore the coral gardens, swim with attractive tropical fish, and spot rare species like the Napoleon wrasse and green sea turtles. Misali Island is also an important nesting site for sea turtles, which adds ecological significance to its protection efforts. Access to the reserve is typically by boat from adjacent towns, and eco-tourism is carefully managed to maintain the area's delicate ecological balance. Activities like guided snorkeling tours, underwater photography, and educational trips on marine conservation are popular here. Misali Island Marine Reserve appeals to nature lovers, marine biologists, and eco-conscious travelers interested in observing healthy coral reefs and practicing low-impact marine recreation. The area also holds cultural significance for local fishing communities, blending ecological protection with sustainable livelihoods.
