Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Mills Reservation is a 157-acre woodland park located in the towns of Montclair and Cedar Grove in Essex County, New Jersey. The area features a mix of forests, rocky ridges, and open ledges that provide visitors with sweeping vistas of the Manhattan skyline, the Watchung Mountains, and local towns. The park is characterized by its trap rock ridgelines and a combination of hardwood forest species such as oak, hickory, and maple. The topography includes wooded slopes, rocky outcrops, and open ledges popular for both hikers and casual visitors. Established in 1952 as a protected natural space, Mills Reservation is managed by Essex County and serves primarily for passive recreation, including hiking, bird watching, and photography. The park contains roughly four miles of trails that vary in difficulty, with the more rugged paths leading to scenic overlooks near the summit of the reservation’s highest point. Historically, the land was owned by the Mills family, local industrialists, before being transferred to the county as a reservation. The park’s proximity to urban centers while retaining natural features makes it a favored destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking quick access to green space in the region. Wildlife commonly seen includes white-tailed deer, squirrels, various songbirds, and occasional raptors. The park's rocky terrain and elevation changes offer primitive climbing opportunities and attractive locations for outdoor exercise and nature study.
