Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Miesville Ravine Park Preserve encompasses approximately 1,500 acres of preserved land located in Dakota County, Minnesota. The preserve protects a deeply incised ravine carved by Trout Brook, a tributary to the Cannon River, and features mature oak-hickory forests, restored prairies, and diverse wildlife habitat. The terrain includes steep ravine walls, upland woodlands, and several wetland areas, providing visitors with varied ecological zones to explore. Historically, the area was home to Native American peoples and later saw agricultural use before efforts to secure parkland under Dakota County’s park system began in the late 20th century. Today, Miesville Ravine Park Preserve offers over 10 miles of multi-use trails suited for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding. The preserve is popular among local outdoor enthusiasts for its relatively rugged topography, abundant wildlife including whitetail deer and numerous bird species, and well-maintained trail system. Key landmarks include several scenic overlooks that provide views into the ravine and trout streams. The park’s mix of forest and prairie restoration projects also makes it a valuable site for conservation education and seasonal wildflower viewing. The preserve’s proximity to the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area makes it an accessible natural retreat for day visits focused on quiet recreation and nature appreciation.
