Maungakawa Scenic Reserve is located near Cambridge in the Waikato region of New Zealand’s North Island. The reserve spans a hill area that provides impressive 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside, including the Waikato River and distant ranges. It covers native forest remnants with regenerating bush, hosting native bird species such as tūī, kererū, and pīwakawaka (fantail). Maungakawa holds great cultural importance for the local Māori, particularly the Ngāti Hauā iwi, as the site incorporates archaeological features and historic pā (fortified villages) remnants. Visitors can follow well-maintained walking tracks that range from short strolls to moderate hikes climbing to the summit lookout, providing excellent photo opportunities of pastoral landscapes and native flora. The reserve is also appreciated for its peaceful environment and outdoor recreation opportunities for families and birdwatchers.
