The Maumturk Mountains Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is located in Connemara, County Galway, on Ireland’s west coast. This stark, granite mountain range stretches approximately 25 kilometers from near Maam Cross to Maum or Maam Turk Pass. The area is characterised by sharp ridges, deep corries, and numerous oligotrophic lakes, reflecting its glacial origins. The SAC designation highlights its importance for preserving a variety of priority habitats, including blanket bogs, alpine and subalpine heaths, as well as important upland grasslands. The Maumturks harbor a rich assemblage of flora such as heathers, ferns, and rare moss species, alongside notable fauna including red grouse, peregrine falcon, Irish hare, and rare butterfly species.
