Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The Maumere Bay Marine Protected Area is located off the northern coast of Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Encompassing a large expanse of the bay, this protected area was established to conserve its richly diverse marine ecosystems, including coral reefs, sea grass beds, and mangroves. Maumere Bay is part of the Coral Triangle, recognized globally for its extraordinary marine biodiversity. The bay supports over 500 species of reef fish, vibrant coral species, and various endangered marine life such as sea turtles and dugongs. Beyond its ecological importance, the area holds cultural value for local fishing communities who rely on sustainable marine resource management. Recreationally, Maumere Bay is highly sought-after for snorkeling and scuba diving due to its clear waters and abundant marine life, with dive sites renowned for coral gardens, dramatic drop-offs, and vibrant underwater species. Visitors also enjoy kayaking and coastal exploration. The area's tropical climate and relatively calm waters make it accessible year-round, although the dry season from May to September offers the best visibility for underwater activities. Infrastructure is modest but improving, with local dive operators and small resorts offering access and services. The preservation efforts focus on balancing ecological protection with sustainable tourism and community involvement, aiming to maintain the health of the reefs while supporting local livelihoods. Maumere Bay Marine Protected Area offers visitors a chance to experience one of the region’s best-preserved marine habitats in a tranquil, natural setting.
