Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Matukituki Valley, located within Mount Aspiring National Park in the Southern Alps, is a gateway to some of the most dramatic landscapes in New Zealand. The valley is carved out by the Matukituki River, dividing into the West and East branches. Renowned for its breathtaking alpine scenery, the area features rugged mountains, cascading waterfalls, dense beech forests, and expansive rivers. The Matukituki Valley is rich in biodiversity, home to native birds such as the kea and morepork, and various alpine flora. Historically, the valley was used by Maori tribes for hunting and gathering and later by European settlers for farming until it became part of the national park in 1964. Outdoor enthusiasts visit Matukituki Valley for its world-class hiking trails, including routes to the iconic Rob Roy Glacier and the French Ridge. Additionally, the valley serves as a base for mountaineering, particularly in the peaks surrounding Mount Aspiring, New Zealand’s second-highest mountain. With numerous huts serviced by the Department of Conservation, the area provides ample opportunity for both day trips and overnight expeditions, making it a favored destination for adventurous travelers.
