About Matagorda Wildlife Management Area

Matagorda Wildlife Management Area is a vast coastal habitat in Texas offering diverse outdoor activities such as birdwatching, hunting, fishing, and hiking amidst marshes, prairies, and woodlands.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Matagorda Wildlife Management Area (WMA) spans approximately 60,000 acres along the Texas Gulf Coast near the town of Palacios. This protected area features a mix of coastal marshes, tidal flats, wetlands, tallgrass prairies, hardwood forests, and estuarine environments. It serves as an important habitat for a variety of wildlife species, especially migratory birds, making it a prime destination for birdwatchers and hunters. The WMA was established to conserve the rich natural resources of the region and to provide sustainable wildlife management opportunities. Visitors can explore miles of trails and unimproved roads by foot, bike, or vehicle, with access to both freshwater ponds and saltwater estuaries. Popular activities include hunting for waterfowl, white-tailed deer, feral hogs, and small game; fishing for coastal species; wildlife photography; and hiking. Areas within the WMA are managed to balance habitat restoration with public recreational use, supporting populations of ducks, doves, quail, and other game species. The diverse ecosystems also support endangered or rare species, including the Texas indigo snake and a variety of migratory shorebirds. Facilities are minimal and rustic, providing a natural and immersive outdoor experience. Its proximity to the Gulf Coast lends unique opportunities for saltwater fishing and bird migration viewing during peak seasons. The WMA offers a less crowded alternative to some of the larger parks and refuges in Texas, appealing to hunters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking coastal wildlife habitat and quiet recreation.
