Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Maracaibo Wetlands encompass extensive coastal marshes, mangroves, tidal flats, and lagoons located around the western shore and southern edge of Lake Maracaibo, the largest lake in South America. This vast wetland system is formed by the interaction of the lake's freshwater inflows with the Caribbean Sea’s tidal forces, resulting in a diverse and dynamic ecosystem.
