About Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve (regional influence area)

Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve is a protected area in the Brazilian Amazon renowned for its unique flooded forest ecosystem and outstanding opportunities for wildlife observation and sustainable ecotourism.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the heart of the central Amazon basin in the state of Amazonas, Brazil, the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve covers vast tracts of várzea, or seasonally flooded forests, creating one of the richest and most dynamic ecosystems in the world. The reserve spans a mosaic of flooded forests, rivers, lakes, and channels, where water levels dramatically rise and fall seasonally. This environment supports a stunning diversity of species, including endangered mammals such as the Amazonian manatee, the giant otter, and the elusive jaguar, alongside over 580 documented bird species and prolific aquatic life. Established in 1996, Mamirauá was the first sustainable development reserve in Brazil designed to harmonize nature conservation with the needs of traditional riverine communities, who practice sustainable fishing, agriculture, and extractivism within the reserve’s guidelines. Visitors are drawn to this remote area for canoe-based wildlife viewing, guided forest walks, and cultural exchanges with local populations. Iconic experiences include sightings of rare primates like the black-headed uacari, spotting giant river otters along the waterways, and exploring the seasonal transformations of the flooded forest landscape. Access is primarily by boat from the nearby town of Tefé, offering a truly immersive Amazonian adventure with opportunities for photography, birdwatching, and learning about the reserve’s innovative community-based conservation model. While infrastructure is modest, the reserve provides lodges and local guides who specialize in ecological and cultural tours that highlight sustainable interaction with one of the Amazon’s most pristine regions.
