About Majete Wildlife Reserve

Majete Wildlife Reserve is a renowned conservation area in southern Malawi, offering exceptional opportunities for wildlife safaris and bird watching in a revitalized African ecosystem.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Majete Wildlife Reserve, located in the Chikwawa District of southern Malawi, covers diverse habitats including open savannah, riverine woodland, and forested hills. Covering approximately 700 square kilometers, it is the largest protected area in the south of Malawi. Originally plagued by poaching, Majete has undergone a remarkable transformation since the early 2000s, due to intensive conservation efforts led by the African Parks Network and local authorities. These efforts have brought back populations of the 'Big Five'—lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhinoceros—making it one of Malawi’s premiere wildlife destinations. Visitors can explore the reserve via guided game drives and birding tours to spot over 350 bird species and numerous mammals including hippos, crocodiles, and various antelope species. The reserve’s Matandwe River forms an important water source, attracting abundant wildlife year-round. Key landmarks include the scenic Majete Hills and established camps such as Mkulumadzi and Liwonde, known for eco-friendly tourism. The reserve appeals to wildlife enthusiasts looking for immersive safari experiences away from hyper-commercialized parks. Its successful conservation model and community engagement initiatives have made Majete a powerful example of wildlife restoration in Africa.
