The Lyngen Alps Protected Landscape encompasses a striking mountain range located on the Lyngen Peninsula in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. Characterized by sharp granite peaks rising above the Lyngenfjorden, the area stretches roughly 90 kilometers and features elevations exceeding 1,800 meters. The landscape is shaped by glacial history, creating steep valleys, glaciers, and clear alpine lakes. The protected status helps preserve its rich biodiversity, including alpine flora, reindeer populations, sea eagles, and other arctic wildlife. Historically, the Lyngen Alps have been significant for local Sámi culture and traditional reindeer herding. The area attracts outdoor enthusiasts year-round, offering extensive hiking trails during summer that highlight panoramic views of fjords and northern lights, while winter transforms the region into a renowned venue for alpine and backcountry skiing. Key landmarks include the peak of Jiehkkevárri, the highest mountain in Troms, and the steep cliffs of Rissavarre. Visitors can also explore coastal fjords and small fishing villages like Lyngseidet, adding cultural depth to the wilderness experience.
