About Luleå Archipelago Nature Reserve

The Luleå Archipelago Nature Reserve is a protected cluster of over 1,300 islands in the Bothnian Bay known for its unique brackish water ecosystem and opportunities for boating, fishing, and wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia, the Luleå Archipelago Nature Reserve spans a vast area comprising more than 1,300 islands and islets, making it one of the most extensive archipelago nature reserves in Sweden. The landscape features rocky outcrops, low coniferous forests, and open water channels. The reserve's waters are brackish, creating a distinct ecological environment where both freshwater and marine species coexist. This varied habitat supports a wide range of flora and fauna, including seabirds such as the common eider and the black guillemot, as well as mammals like seals and otters. Historically, the islands have been used for fishing and seasonal hunting by local Sami and Finnish populations, with some still hosting traditional fishing huts. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the Luleå Archipelago for its excellent recreational offerings, including kayaking through sheltered waterways, sailing, and ice skating or snowmobiling during the winter months. Several islands have campfire sites and simple shelters for overnight use, allowing visitors to experience the pristine wilderness up close. The reserve's unique position, north of the Arctic Circle, also offers opportunities to observe the midnight sun in summer and the northern lights in winter. Accessibility varies with the seasons, with boat services available in summer months and frozen ice roads connecting some islands in winter. The Luleå Archipelago Nature Reserve is a destination for those seeking solitude, natural beauty, and diverse outdoor activities in a subarctic coastal setting.
