Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Lower Oder Valley National Park, located in the German state of Brandenburg along the Oder River, protects one of the last intact large-scale floodplain areas in Central Europe. The park encompasses vast wet meadows, natural oxbow lakes, marshes, and river channels shaped by the seasonal flooding of the Oder. These dynamic water landscapes create valuable habitats for a wide variety of plant and animal species, particularly water birds such as cranes, white-tailed eagles, and beavers. Its ecological significance has resulted in it being part of the transboundary protection area with Poland’s adjacent national park.

Historically, the floodplain was used for traditional agriculture and fishing, but today the park’s management focuses on preserving natural flood dynamics and biodiversity. Visitors are drawn to the park for birdwatching, canoeing or kayaking on the serene river sections, hiking along levee trails, and cycling through peaceful rural landscapes. Observation towers and nature trails provide excellent vantage points to see waterfowl, red foxes, deer, and other wildlife.
