About Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve

Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve protects a rare remnant of tropical rainforest in Veracruz, Mexico, offering diverse wildlife viewing and opportunities to experience a lush, humid ecosystem.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the southeastern region of Veracruz, Mexico, the Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve encompasses an area of tropical rainforest that is among the northernmost extensions of the Mesoamerican rainforest. The terrain is a combination of rugged volcanic mountains, dense jungle, freshwater lakes, and coastal plains. The reserve was established in 1998 to preserve the ecological richness of this area, which supports a wide variety of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic or threatened. The region is known for its remarkable biodiversity, including species such as jaguars, spider monkeys, and the extremely rare harpy eagle. The forest itself is predominantly tropical wet forest, with towering hardwoods, palms, orchids, and ferns. Visitors can enjoy hiking through trails that meander past rivers, waterfalls, and viewpoints atop extinct volcanoes like San Martín and Santa Marta. Birdwatching is a major draw, with over 400 bird species recorded, alongside amphibians and reptiles thriving in the humid environment. Indigenous communities surround and live near the reserve, maintaining traditional land use practices that have helped conserve much of the remaining forest. Outdoor enthusiasts can experience guided nature walks, wildlife spotting, and photography, while learning about local conservation efforts. The reserve's lakes, such as Laguna del Catemaco, add to the scenic and recreational appeal by offering boat excursions and chances to spot aquatic wildlife. Overall, Los Tuxtlas provides a vital refuge for tropical forest ecosystems, showcasing Mexico's unique natural heritage and offering diverse outdoor activities focused on nature appreciation and conservation education.
